This year, the 3rd session of the annual European Youth Forum for Road Safety took place under the auspices of the European Commsion organised by Responsible Young Driver Belgium.
The event, with the aims of creating a unique and energectic European network of young activists involved in road safety campaigning brought together 70 delegates from over 35 countries to the epicentre of European decision making, the European Commission in Brussels, Belgium.
The event took place on the 1st-2nd July 2010 and this year, Tune into Traffic was invited to represent the United Kingdom. With great gusto, motivation and drive, the 70 young delegates shared practice, campaigns and through their projects, collectively pledged to tackle the foremost cause of death amongst young people; road traffic incidents.
With representation from international road safety organizations such as Youth for Road Safety, The FIA Foundation, Michelin and the European Injury Prevention Unit, delegates explained how they are engaging their peers in the road safety message, offering important learning for their European Neighbours.
Day 1 comprised of 'setting the scene' with several presentations received from organizations working directly with young people. Tune into Traffic was priviledged to present its work in the UK sharing a platform with Responsbile Young Drivers, Youth for Road Safety and the FIA Foundation. A real sense of urgency was expressed, young people want to see change happen, to see the figure of young road victims decrease dramatically and to maximize their efforts nationwide.
Day 2 offered a hands on practical partnerships within the European Network, materialising in a 'collective European Action' that all particpating nations will implement by July next year. This action will, for the first time, see young road safety activists join together to organize road safety awareness days in their nations to sensitize young people on the importance of road safety. An event that will reach hundreds of thousands of young people and potentially save thousands more lives.
A key message expressed and frequently illustrated was the challenge of making road safety innovative and engaging for young people. By speaking the language of young people, the delegates will save lives and change mentalities.
