In 2007, while I was a member of the United Kingdom Youth Parliament as a representative for the West Midlands, I was selected by the UK Department of Transport to attend the United Nations World Youth Assembly for Road Safety. This was a global youth gathering of nearly 400 young people from over 100 countried to discuss this issue. I thought, 'really? road safety? why is this such a big deal that the UN are gathering young people together to discuss this?'.
This is where the journey began. Three days of shock, relevation, reflecion and inspiration. Here I became aware that road traffic crashes are the single biggest killer of young people worldwide. So many young lives are taken from us every day. People lose brothers, sisters, mothers, daughters in collisions that could have been prevented. All the young delegates pledged and promised that we would do something and when we returned to our nations, we initiated our campaigns.
Tune into Traffic began life with the help of Channel 4 in a project called 'Battlefront'. Battlefront teamed 20 young people with campaign mentors and it was here that the idea for the 'earphone campaign' began. Young people love music but MP3 players are a danger to young people on the road.
The documentary above explains it all...it had been aired 3 times on Channel 4 since 2008.
Since the Channel 4 Documentary in 2008 - Channel 4 have re-aired it over 3 times. Every time this has happened, Tune into Traffic has had thousands of people writing in and contacting us. This means that thousands of young people have been engaging with the campaign more than ever!
Now Tune into Traffic has moved leaps and bounds and we are linked with several major organizations who are avid supporters of the campaign. Some of the most important moves has been our linking to YOURS - Youth For Road Safety Global NGO.
